Otoplasty
Otoplasty is the technique that corrects deformities such as when the ears appear to stick out, creating psychological disturbance in young children and adults. It is particularly important for young children since they can be very easily become an object of teasing and ridicule at school. Adults tend to lose their self-confidence in their sex appeal and some others feel very uncomfortable with their friends, while women tend to grow their hair.
Otoplasty is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head after the age of 4 and there is no restriction for any age after that.
The operation is usually performed as an outpatient and there is no need for an overnight stay. If the child is very young we may recommend general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia and sedation is normally recommended for adults.
Operation
The surgeon makes a small incision in the back of the ear and then will sculpt the cartilage and bend it back toward the head. Special stitches are used to maintain the new shape, and in all cases the scar behind the ear disappears in time.
After the Operation
Adults and children can return home after the operation. The patient's head is wrapped in a light bandage to provide the best moulding and healing for around 48-72 hours.
Any activity in which the ear may be bent should be avoided for 4 weeks
or so. Most adults can return to work after a week. We also recommend to
inform the teacher to keep an eye on the child for a few days.
